THE MOVEMENT: National Harm Reduction Coalition works for the Harm Reduction movement built on a belief in and respect for the rights of people who use drugs. Our strategies include building leadership among people who use drugs and supporting communities in reducing the negative consequences associated with drug use. If you long to live in a world that supports the health and dignity of people who use drugs, join the movement today.
THE NHRC BEGINNINGS: It started in 1993. More than a decade of government neglect and abandonment had left people who use drugs vulnerable to the AIDS epidemic. A handful of individual activists, educators, and people who used drugs began launching grassroots efforts to support members of their communities who were dying from this brutal disease. Brought together by their love and compassion for people who use drugs, these individuals formed a small working group that became the start of the Harm Reduction movement.
WHAT THE NHRC DOES: The NHRC works to uplift the voices and experiences of people who use drugs and bring harm reduction strategies to scale. For more than 25 years, we’ve worked with communities to create, sustain, and expand evidence-based harm reduction programs and policies.
The Harm Reduction Coalition is a Movement for Social Justice. It’s roots emerged from activist movements demanding equity and justice. Understand where it started and how it’s grown through today. For more information on the NHRC, please visit: https://harmreduction.org/
